【 Physical Properties 】 The reagent is white or yellow solid powder, solid phosphorus pentachloride also exists in ionic form [PCl4]+ and [PCl6] --, mp 179~181 oC, d 1.6 g/cm3. It is soluble in acetone, trichloromethane, carbon disulfide, toluene, benzene, n-hexane, ether, carbon tetrachloride and other organic solvents.

[Preparation and commodity] The reagent is prepared by chlorine and red phosphorus, and the general reagent companies are sold. Reagent purification requires distillation under vacuum conditions.

[Precautions] The reagent reacts with moisture to release hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid, which is harmful to respiratory tract, skin and eyes. The operation should be carried out in a fume hood. The reagent should be stored in a dry, corrosion-resistant place, and the laboratory should be stored in a glass bottle wrapped in a polythene plastic bag.
